Problem statement

RBC mobile banking app launched an AI-powered digital assistance service called NOMI and designed to help clients budget and save money. But it does not suggest the next step, how to maximize earnings from saved funds to accomplish user’s goals.

HMW Statement

  1. How might we help user to set their financial future goals?
  2. How might we help user to grow leftover money after budgeting?
  3. How might we help user to match the best possible investment with their financial goals?

Solution Assumptions

A suitable investment feature integrated into RBC’s NOMI app to advise users after saving enough money.

User Goal

To save money for down payments on the house or education or vacation funds.

Business Goal

To increase user client engagement with RBC mobile banking app along with attracting new investors.

Research

Feature Design

Research objective

I wanted to understand how users make decisions around their cash flows and investments.

How users measure and manage cash flow priorities?

How users categories their saving goals? E.g. travel, education fund etc.

What are users' responses regarding their short and long term financial goals?

Secondary Research

To further understand user behaviours and habits regarding financial goals. I collected research data from the following:

  1. RBC NOMI app user engagement data.
  2. Data from Canada’s financial agency.
  3. Data extraction from Reddit forum member’s discussion about personal financial planning.

RBC Nomi APP user engagement in one year

  1. 750k customers and 1.2mm smart budgets established in <1 year.
  2. Find & Save opened 250k new savings accounts.
  3. Customers are saving on average 225$ a month!

Data from Canada’s financial agency

Research shows that 50% of Canadians don’t have an investment saving plan, which is shocking. Everyone needs to make a financial plan – regardless of their age, income, or employment status. Investment isn’t the same thing as a budget.

About two-thirds of Canadians (66%) are planning some type of significant purchase or expenditure within the next three years, such as

  • 11% Buying a home or condo as a principal residence
  • 17% Embarking on a home improvement or repair.
  • 14% taking a vacation
  • 13% purchasing a vehicle
  • 23% of Canadians aged 18 to 24 planning their education within the next three years.
  • 50% of Canadians aged 18 to 24 currently have student loans.

User interview’s

Secondary Reseach Findings

  1. Millennials are saving, But hesitate to use Financial Advisors.
  2. Demonstrating that they are very much financial “do-it-yourselfers.”
  3. Important financial goals categories are house, education, vehicle and travel.

Primary Research

I conducted a 30-minute contextual users interview with the age group of 20 to 45 years old. In addition, I pulled out RBC Nomi app user’s discussion data from Reddit r/personalfinance online forum.

Interviews Questions

I prepared interview questions based on the following three parts:

  1. To learn about users’ demographic and personal information.
  2. To learn about users’ habits and behaviours.
  3. To learn about users’ priorities for short term and long term goals.

Based on the interviews I identify two personas types.

1. Family

Family

2.Single

Journey Map of Family Persona

I created the journey map based on the users’ interviews about how the family persona makes its financial decision based on their needs. I learned their most common priorities are to save for home improvement, retirement and kid’s education funds.

FamilyJourneyMap

Journey Map of Single Persona

Unlike family persons, single people make their financial decision quite differently. I got the following insight:

  1. Single persona’s saving journey starts with emergency funds.
  2. They put more focus on short terms goals such as travel funds over retirement.
  3. They are willing to take an informed risk for long term (6-8 years) investment goal such as a down payment for the house.

Single Persona User Story

I’m 22/yo, and I have $15,000 saved up with no debt. I feel like letting my money sit in my bank account is wasteful. I worked hard for my money and want to grow my money with as little risk as possible. I do not need to get rich; I want a safe investment option. However, I have no clue where to start. What do you guys think I should begin researching/ do with my money? I am willing to put up to $8-10k of it into something. What would be a good and little to no risk investment option with a $15,000 savings for a 22/yo?

User interview’s

Primary Reseach Findings

Based on the contextual interviews and users forum discussions. I got the following key insights:

  1. After paying off their debts, user likes to save for emergency funds.
  2. The user thinks money sitting in a saving bank account is wasteful.
  3. The user wants to make an informed decision to grow their savings with as little risk as possible.
  4. Commonly used user tools for managing and maintain funds are excel spreadsheets, online banking and third-party apps like mint.com.

user task flow

Based on research findings, I designed a series of task scenario within user task flow to access a new investment feature called myGoals. After turning on the MyGoal feature, a persona can decide to interact with the tool at any stage of their journey while exploring the mobile banking app.

design

Design System

I replicated brand colours, illustrations & Icon style and typography based on the existing RBC mobile app design system. In addition, I used SF family fonts native to the iOS app.

Hi-fidelity Wireframe

I created high-fidelity based on the design system. I designed icons and illustrations using SF symbols and undraw.co an open-source platform.

test & ITERATION

Lastly, I recruited users to test my solution assumptions. Although the user testing was positive, it identified a few areas that needed tweaking with the prototype. Followings are the insights and iterations:

Learnings

Following are the key takeaways after working on the RBC NOMI app feature design project:

  • I learned about the complexities and challenges of user’s behaviours and emotions around their money. I think having a quality content strategy along with tools will be quite helpful for users.
  • I was amazed by the capabilities of AI-driven personalization tools. I am curious to dig even more now.
